Heart Failure Mortality

The heart failure mortality measure includes Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries aged 65 or older and assesses the occurrence of death from any cause within 30 days after the date of hospital admission for heart failure. CMS began publicly reporting the heart failure mortality measure in 2007 and it became part of the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP) program in 2014.

Heart failure mortality measure results are updated annually. As part of ongoing measure surveillance, analyses that provide a comprehensive overview of national performance on the measure or investigate select hospital practices that may impact hospital performance are conducted.
