Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Mortality

The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) mortality measure includes Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries aged 65 or older and assesses the occurrence of death from any cause within 30 days after the date of hospital admission for COPD. CMS began publicly reporting the COPD mortality measure in 2014 and it will become part of the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP) program in 2021.

COPD mortality measure results are updated annually. As part of ongoing measure surveillance, analyses that provide a comprehensive overview of national performance on the measure or investigate select hospital practices that may impact hospital performance are conducted.
