What will I find in Data Exploration?

Types of data exploration:

  • Hospital Performance by Geographic Location
Explore measure results by region, sub-region, state, or hospital. Narrow results by selecting hospital characteristics or searching for a specific geographic location or hospital name.

  • Episode-of-Care Payment
Examine what percent or how much each care setting contributes to payment for AMI, Heart Failure, and Pneumonia. Care settings include both hospital admission and post-acute care.

  • National Rates over Time
Examine national trends in AMI, COPD, Heart Failure, and Pneumonia admission, readmission, and observation stay rates. Adjust the timeframe from January 2006 through two months ago.

  • Customize and Compare Hospital Peer Groups
Select hospital characteristics or search for a specific hospital to build a hospital profile. Then compare measure results for each hospital profile.

  • Hospital Measure Results Agreement
Examine how consistently hospitals perform on pairs of outcome measures.

  • Overlap in Social Risk Factors
Select one or more sociodemographic characteristics to explore how many hospitals meet the selected characteristics and their geographic location, for each measure.

  • Within Measurement Period Trends
Evaluate measure trends across three years to identify patterns, changes, and potential unintended consequences in measure results.

  • State Level Disparities
Explore how a state's overall performance on CMS's hospital quality measures relates to their performance for patients with social risk factors.

What will I find in Research Briefs?

Each of the measures have the following analytic briefs:

  • Hospital Variation
The distribution of hospital results (risk standardized mortality rate, risk standardized readmission rate, or risk standardized payment) for each measure.

  • Three-Year Trends in Condition-Specific Rates
Trends analysis of the median hospital results for three reporting years.

  • Results by Social Risk Factor: Medicaid Patients
The performance of hospitals in the deciles with the highest and lowest proportion of Medicaid patients.

  • Results by Social Risk Factor: African-American Patients
The performance of hospitals in the deciles with the highest and lowest proportion of African-American patients.

  • Results by Hospital Characteristics
The performance of hospitals based on safety-net status, teaching status and urban/rural location.

Each of the payment measures also include:

  • Index versus Post-Acute Care Payments
The distribution of risk standardized payment for index hospitalizations and post-acute care, defined by quintile.
